Looking for nice place to live with max hour commute into London?

Hi all, I'm wondering if people can suggest some nice places to live in the countryside which are max an hour train commute into the City. We want somewhere not too big, a few shops or small village and country pub. Price is not an issue but would really like somewhere with character. Any suggestions? :-)
